A second Marius Pinel

What an incredible distinction for Oxford, Ohio, to receive the first Pinelization ever performed in the United States of America ! It should really put this town on the map. I owe the signal honor of being the go-between who made this possible to my passion for Jean de La Fontaine, and to my great good fortune of having discovered the work of Yves Le Pestipon on the fabulist, which in strange ways parallels my own, and to the even greater good fortune of meeting him in Villeneuve-Minervois and then the greater one still of hosting him and Marie-France in our home in Oxford.

Upon reflection, of course, I cannot think of a more appropriate place than Oxford, the home of the university known as the “Miami Bubble,” so intently is its attention turned back upon itself and its students sheltered from the rest of the world their parents regard with firm conviction as dangerous to their moral health. For the Place Marius Pinel has its own mysterious self-reflecting institution, the miraculous kiosk from which no music, however well-performed, can escape to an eagerly awaiting ear, since, perhaps due to an error in its acoustical design, every sound there produced is unfailingly thrown back upon its source. Yet thanks to the devoted practitioners of Pinelization, something of the Place Marius Pinel does escape to the rest of the world, the sacred soil we in Oxford await with hope and joy.

To celebrate this honor, I have discovered the existence of a second Marius Pinel: a doctor who wrote a book on lingual tuberculosis. That there is more than one Marius Pinel is appropriate, for both the town named Oxford and the university named Miami are afflicted with a double that inconveniently bears the same name.
